Instructions for taking and submitting a buccal swab for DNA testing

The swabs will be used to develop a DNA test for determination of hereditary cataract in Miniature Schnauzer.


1. The samples should NOT be taken within two hours of the dog eating.

2. Two swabs are provided for each dog to be tested

3. Carefully remove the first swab from the case avoiding any contact with the brush at the end

4a. Holding the white swab shaft,

4b. roll the swab brush firmly on the inside of the dog's cheek at least 20 times on each side fo the mouth, ensuring the brush is moved across the entire cheek surface

5. Place swab directly back into the envelope provided, marked with ’Please place 2 swabs from a single dog in here’

6. Repeat steps 3 - 5 with the second swab

7. Label the small envelope clearly with the dog's registered name and number

Fill in the ‘Sample Submission for Genetic Research’ form. It is imperative that the information given about the dog is correct

Put the following in the addressed return envelope:

A.    Both swabs in the small, marked envelope

B.    Completed form: ‘Sample Submission for Genetic Research’

C.    A copy of your dog's 5 generation pedigree

D.   Copy of your dog's latest certificate of eye examination

SAMPLES MUST BE RETURNED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE SWABBING PROCESS IS COMPLETED, VIA FIRST CLASS MAIL, TO ENSURE THE QUALITY OF THE SAMPLES ON ARRIVAL AT THE ANIMAL HEALTH TRUST
